About and sources

godzfellas collects news headlines by subject and measures the coverage: who and what is being written about, how much, by whom, and what is picking up. Every headline links to the publisher that wrote it. It is a way to see the whole of the reporting at once, not a replacement for reading it.

How to read the dashboards

  • Every number counts headlines. A story carried under the same headline by several outlets is counted once and lists the others.
  • Topics (people, fights, organisations) come from the labels publishers attach to their own articles, and from finding those names in other outlets' headlines. A person is a name that publishers tag, not a verified record, and a headline that uses only a surname can be missed.
  • Rising now compares the last three days with a typical three days in the two weeks before.
  • Selecting a bar, a day or a topic filters everything on the page by it. The address changes with the filters, so a filtered view can be bookmarked or sent to someone.
  • A headline opens the publisher's article in a new tab, so the dashboard stays where you left it.
  • All dates and times are Italian time, whatever your own, so a day on a chart is an Italian day. Faded columns are days that are not complete.
  • Words in the headlines counts every word of every headline. Blue words are part of a person's name, green ones of an organisation's, orange ones are everything else.

What you will not see

No article text, no excerpts and none of the publishers' photographs. Where a headline has a summary under it, it is a short description written for this site, not text taken from the article. To read a story, follow its link.

How headlines are collected

Headlines come from the feeds publishers offer for this purpose, checked about once an hour; each page says how often it is itself refreshed. Each publisher's robots.txt is followed on every request, and a publisher that blocks automated access is left out rather than worked around.
